I'm now left only with random thoughts :-) Are you using discover or some similar hardware detecting utility ?? If yes, try disabling them and try again ?? And yes, if possible please manually download the 2.6.9/2.6.10 kernel packages from p.d.o and try them. Just to eliminate that it's a kernel issue.
