Thank you for your useful information. -werner- BTW: I have installed a similar program 'noflusd', too. This is also available as *.deb at http://www.tuebingen.linux.de/kobras/noflushd/ >From 'man noflushd' ... Description noflushd monitors disk activity and spins down disks that have been idle for more than <timeout> seconds. noflushd actually used to live in some versions of bdflush, but since kernel version 2.2.11, bdflush has been completely replaced by the kernel-level kupdate daemon. When noflushd decides to spin down an idle disk, it syncs the filesystems, calls the external skript /sbin/noflushd- spindown that handles the actual spindown and stops kup- date, so all writes to block devices are suspended. Spinup happens on the first read request to the disk. noflushd then calls the external skript /sbin/noflushd-spinup that handles spinup if necessary and restarts kupdate. Sending signal 10 (SIGUSR1) to noflushd forces the daemon to spin down disks immediately. IMPORTANT: noflushd is mainly intended for use on note- books and currently can sensibly handle only one hard disk. Per default, it monitors /dev/hda. ... -- Werner Heuser | There is no time, /~~ LiLAC - Linux with Laptop Computers | ... to make war ... /~~~ Berlin, Germany | -Lou Reed- /~~~~ T. +49 30 349 53 86 <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> www.snafu.de/~wehe/index_li.html
