We used to do that but it was unreliable as the dynamic IP addresses used 
on most dialup / broadband connections to not have correct DNS entries for 
a MX.

Caused some remote servers to reject our mail and the other thing to bear 
in mind is an increasing number of ISP's are blocking port 25 - so it would 
stop working.

We decided to go with a public authenticated smtp service - AuthSMTP - 
http://www.authsmtp.com - been using it about 2 months now and it seems 
fine.
