Many reasons, explained here for example: http://www.unicom.com/pw/reply-to-harmful.html "Good" e-mail clients usually have 3 different reply modes: "private reply" (replies only to sender) "list reply" (replies to the list, and not to the sender) "group reply" (replies to everyone mentionned in the headers) I don't know if it'd be possible to reduce the number of modes to 2 ("reply to sender" and "reply to all") with it still being useful. Either way, changing the Reply-to would be bad because everyone that uses their e-mail program the right way would get confused (as they'd be sending private replies to the list).
