i already used the precompiled packages.. i also used alien to make a deb package from the rpm that ati offers..
the system shows these stripes when i switch to console or log out of kde... and then the whole system crashes..
i found a howto where another configuration of XFree86-4 is described..
i also tested fglrxconfig... the result is the same.. it works but switching to
console or logging out... it all crashes..
thanks Tim Taubert

in order to get 3d acceleration on linux laptop working i downloaded to newest driver from ati.com.. for xfree 4.3.0...
driver version is 3.11.1
There are packaged drivers, see http://xoomer.virgilio.it/flavio.stanchina/debian/fglrx-installer.html#prebuilt
the problem is that when i want to switch to console the system hangs and some stripes are visible...
I have a 9600M and I see the stripes too, sometimes. They are thin and somewhat moving horizontally. But they go away when I switch to console or another X display and back.
are there any settings to be made in /etc/X11/XFree86-4?
fglrxconfig will create a XF86Config-4 for you. It worked out of the box for me.
Good luck, Mario
