You're lucky. Unfortunately the sarge install puts

        auto eth0

in the /etc/networking/interfaces file, which means that it tries to
bring the network up before the PCMCIA services are loaded.

Typing dhclient as root will enable the network, but a preferable
solution is to remove the offending line and just leave the

        iface eth0 inet dhcp
