Hi all- I have a Sony PCG FRV-26 laptop running debian with a 2.4.22 kernel. The display card is ATI Radeon which is only supported by versions of XFree86 4.3 and after. Currently, I have Xfree86 4.2.1 that comes with the testing versions(i think!) and use the vesa driver for the display. I have tried upgrading to XFree86 by downloading the 4.3 & 4.4 versions from the Xfree86 website but have been running into problems. I can't get the gdm to run. I looked at /var/log/XFree86.0.log --the system complains about the nvidia driver(something about a glx extension) and that it cannot find a usb mouse. I tried installing the nvidia-glx package but that did'nt help. 4.2.1 runs just fine though and i don't quite understand why 4.3 and 4.4 don't work . I looked at a couple of backports to get 4.3 but none that i am aware of function. Does anybody know of functioning backports where i could get xfree86 4.3 and after. I know its available in the unstable distribution but i'm a little wary of trying it unless i know it will work.
The other question i have is about lilo. I have kernels vmlinuz2.2.20 and vmlinuz2.4.22 currently in my /boot. I noticed that there are a few kernel-images for 2.6.4 available now. If i install the 2.6.4-kernel-image, is there a way of retaining the previous two versions as well?. I would like my machine to be able to run the other two kernels even if 2.6.4 installation does'nt work. Also, if i install a kernel-image and i find out later that there are patches i wish to add, is there a way to do it or is compiling the kernel the only option.
