don't know if it'll work (I can't see why not :) but you can try to setup 2 different input sections, one for synaptics and one for trakpoint, eg:

It would be excellent to get extra features of the trackpoint device, as you can find in Windows. E.g. holding the middle mousebutton and then use the trackpoint to scroll. But that must be implemented in the driver or in applications...
