I had the same problem on a desktop PC with a Radeon 9000. I solved the problem with this: http://www.debianhelp.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=phpBB_14&file=index&action=viewtopic&topic=3322&9 and now 3D works properly (1100 FPS with glxgears).
