That's a good sign. :-) I would definitely start by turning off the encryption on the RG-1000 temporarily to see if you can get a "normal" connection going, then turn it back on using the method mentioned where you can define a hex WEP key directly in the RG-1000. Once you do that, you can define the WEP key in hex on the Linux boxes, and other clients and you'll be all up and runnin'.
