Ahh. Other posts have mentioned 1400x1050 as a native resolution. dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 does NOT give you this as a choice. So I edited XF86Config-4 manually and now I have perfectly clear resolution with no black borders. Using my whole 15inch display now. Very nice!
