You've raised two different issues. Does the card not work or does dhcp not
work? Can you assign a static address [with ifconfig]?

I'm guessing your real problem is dhcp. In menconfig, go to "Networking
options" and be sure the first "Packet socket" and sixth "Socket filtering"
options have asterisks next to them. These are required by the default dhcp
client.
