If you're using 3.0r1 you have the choice of installing a 2.2 kernel (the default installation) or a 2.4 kernel (type "bf24" at the "boot:" prompt). Toward the end of the installation you'll be asked if you want to remove the PCMCIA packages. Be sure you answer "no" to that.
