Doing the research always seems like an interesting part especially with laptops. One place I always consult when I have questions is the Linux on Laptops website. As an example for the Thinkpad 770, there are a lot of entries of folks who have gotten the laptop working, what they had to do to make it work, and any unusual or special requirements.
