I have /etc/console/boottime.kmap.gz here. It is less than 3 kb.

No clue. Some wild guesses....
a) Something with the console-driver (framebuffer support) choosen in the 
kernel-config ?
b) Booting into a too small ramdisk ?
c) Some mounts not correctly set in /etc/fstab properly (swap) ?
