GRUB shoudl deal fine with this case.

This is inconsistent with what you sent above.  I'd use

  root (hd0,6)
  kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.18 root=/dev/hda7

Incrementing to (hd0,7) and /dev/hda8 if your original text is correct
and / is really on /dev/hda8.
