How would I boot and begin installation in this scenario?
My vaio has a firewire DVD-ROM drive. I was nervous too. It turns out the bios can boot fine from the CD, but the installer then can't mount the CD once it's booted (lack of firewire drivers etc). So I copied the data from the cd onto my fileserver and nfs exported it. The CD was used to boot the installer then I told the installer to find the base archives on the nfs mount. The rest was done over ftp.
