Hi, I just got a new laptop (a powerpc) running a recent 2.4 kernel (2.4.20-pre9-ben0) and see a lot of HD access when I do nothing. I have stopped everything possible and then have:
~$ ps aux USER PID %CPU %MEM VSZ RSS TTY STAT START TIME COMMAND root 1 0.0 0.2 1480 600 ? S 20:42 0:04 init root 2 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? SW 20:42 0:00 [keventd] root 3 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? SWN 20:42 0:00 [ksoftirqd_CPU0] root 4 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? SW 20:42 0:02 [kswapd] root 5 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? SW 20:42 0:00 [bdflush] root 6 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? SW 20:42 0:00 [kupdated] root 12 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? SW 20:42 0:00 [khubd] root 16 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? SW 20:42 0:00 [kjournald] root 327 0.0 0.2 1472 588 tty1 S 20:42 0:00 /sbin/getty 38400 tty1 root 328 0.0 0.7 3572 1964 tty2 S 20:42 0:00 -bash root 329 0.0 0.2 1472 580 tty3 S 20:42 0:00 /sbin/getty 38400 tty3 root 330 0.0 0.2 1472 580 tty4 S 20:42 0:00 /sbin/getty 38400 tty4 root 331 0.0 0.2 1472 580 tty5 S 20:42 0:00 /sbin/getty 38400 tty5 root 332 0.0 0.2 1472 580 tty6 S 20:42 0:00 /sbin/getty 38400 tty6 root 1605 0.0 0.7 4080 1808 tty2 R 23:09 0:00 ps aux And I still see (and hear) HD access every 20 seconds or so. I guess it's bdflush or kjournald that does that. Is there a way to change this? kjournald is there because of ext3. Could it be responsible for that?
