Hard to diagnose. Some battery types, especially those before say 1998 - 99, experience problems charging. For whatever reason they are just unable to gain a full charge and often disarge at a more advanced rate. Replacing your battery may indeed solve this. If you know someone with a similar laptop you could also borrow one of theirs for testing. This would let you know if the problem is the laptop or the battery.
