I have used both wired and wireless LAN at the same time here. I don't, usually, of course :-) If you want to script the detection of whether there is a connection you could look at some of the scripts in 'whereami', particularly using things like mii-tool to see if there is a LAN plugged into your wired port. One day, maybe, I should look at teaching 'whereami' to detect a WLAN by SSID or something. At this stage I only have the one WLAN myself, and don't do any warXing, so perhaps someone else will scratch that particular itch. I have 'whereami' set to figure out whether it is wired or wireless, and exactly which LAN it is on, when I open the lid.
