IIRC, the ESS1868 is a PnP soundblaster compatible, you can try this: # modprobe sb That is the essence of how sound gets started in my system. There is more information in the kernel-doc package for your kernel (my kernel is 2.4.19-pre5, so it might be a little different for you).
