I have just tried route -n, and retested the internet connection and fortunately (or unfortunately) it is working again. I am somewhat surprised by this, as I have been trying to fix the problem for about a week. I have finished the upgrade, and restarted several times, trying to recreate the problem, but it seems to have gone away. I can't really explain this, as I hadn't changed anything for a few days. Hopefully it won't come back. Thanks for the help anyway. Will

The second line shows that you have an IP address (I assume this comes from your sygate server.) Are you able to access other machines on your LAN and/or the gateway? If you can access your LAN, but not the internet, then it's probably a routing problem. What is the output of 'route -n'? It appears you already have an address through DHCP, which means that pump (or dhclient, etc.) is already running. That is why it is hanging when you try to run it.
