the problem about static noise might also be a hardware prob. With earphones I also get a lot of static noise (under SuSE, Debian as well as under W2k). When I connect my laptop to my amplifier I get no statics. I guess that's because so much hardware is so close together in a notebook and therefore device interferences (or something like that) with the sound output. The problem might be solved (in case it's a hardware prob) by using qualitiy earphones that are protected against interferences.
