Look through the mail archives at 
http://www.swiss.ai.mit.edu/projects/omnibook.  Problems
with PCMCIA have been addressed there a couple of times.

You may also want to consider woody instead of potato
(it helps with some of the newer hardware that's in the
laptop you have).
