Debian 2.2r4 ships with a relatively old version of Xfree86; like 3.3.6 or something. Are you sure that this version of X supports the video display adaptor in your laptop? You could check out the 4.1 release notes at www.xfree86.org for both 3.3.6 and 4.1. If you decide that the current X server is not supporting that video card, you could upgrade to testing and get X4.1.
