Hmm.. are you sure anti-aliasing is enabled?
If not then enable it in the "state" menu.

xdvi does have anti-aliasing enabled by default it can be switched
on/off with shift-G

When anti-aliasing is turned of the pixels at the border of a letter
are either black or white ... this doesn't look good for most scalable
fonts as they are not designed for low-resolution devices.
Anti-aliasing smooths the border of the fonts by using gray pixels
and their brightness depends on how much of that pixel is really
covered by the letter.
