I think you need to install the pcmcia-cs package and the
pcmcia-modules-<kernel version> package (do "apt-cache search
pcmcia-modules-*" to see all the available packages).  That has
precompiled modules in it.  WIth a stock kernel, that should be all
you need.  If you recompile the kernel, you will need to install the
pcmcia-source package and recompile the modules.
