Title: flwm
The Fast Light Window Manager

Flwm is my attempt to combine the best ideas I have seen in several window managers. The primary influence and code base is from wm2 by Chris Cannam. Primary features are:

  • Nifty sideways titlebars.
  • No icons. You deiconize by picking off a pop-up menu. This means no space is wasted by icons.
  • The same pop-up menu controls multiple desktops and lets you launch programs.
  • Occupies as little screen space as possible. The border and titles are as thin as I could possibly make them. And maximized windows waste zero pixels vertically!
  • Independent maximize buttons for width & height.
  • Understands Motif, KDE, and Gnome window manager hints, and works with SGI programs that assumme 4DWM.
  • Really small and fast code.

Newest changes in version 1.00:

  • The executable version is compiled on a modern (ie 2.2) Linux system.
  • Smaller font and blue selection color used in menus to match most other software.
  • Lots of bug fixes and code cleanup.

Here is a screenshot of version 0.10 (the menu looks much nicer in the newer desktop version). The menu is popped up in the middle (this was done by hitting the right mouse button on the titlebar to the kedit menu):

To compile flwm you need the fltk library. A static-linked Linux 486 executable is also provided here.

If you have customized flwm, when compiling be sure to look at the newest config.h rather than just use an old one. There are often additional symbols defined in new versions that must exist for compilation to be correct.
