The chip is Yamaha YMF-744B. It works with alsa drive 0.58 (from
woody). I have Toshiba Satellite 4200 and sound works OK, but you must
recompile the alsa drive for your kernel (mine is 2.2.17 from potato),
and unmute the volume (by default is mute).
BTW, what video chip do you have? Mine is S3 Savage IX. I found an
X_SVGA patched for this chip, it works OK but the mouse is not
displayed, instead I have an ugly rectangle.
