Oltre alle modifiche della documentazione per le point release e le discussioni sul futuro dell'<a href="http://www.debian.org/volatile/";>archivio volatile</a>, uno dei punti più importanti del dibattito è stato il progresso del prossimo rilascio di Debian 6.0 <q>Squeeze</q>. Il team ha richiesto dei contenuti per le <q>Note di rilascio</q>, che dovrebbero documentare tutte le potenziali difficoltà che si possono incontrare durante un avanzamento di versione. È stato inoltre rilevato che tutte le transizioni sono state effettuate, individuando i seguenti problemi che attualmente bloccano il rilascio:<a href="http://bugs.debian.org/571255";>un bug in udev</a> che potrebbe causare inconvenienti durante l'avanzamento di versione (una patch è stata proposta nel frattempo); un <a href="http://bugs.debian.org/546528";>problema nello script di preinstallazione di dash</a> (una patch è stata proposta ed è al momento in esame); la necessità che debian-installer raggiunga il rilascio finale; la mancanza di documentazione appropriata riguardante l'installazione e l'aggiornamento di Squeeze nelle <q>Note di rilascio</q> e infine la necessità che l'archivio <tt>security</tt> supporti il nuovo formato sorgente 3.0.</p> <p>Il Release Team spera quindi di vedere risolti questi problemi entro la fine di ottobre, cosa che permetterebbe il rilascio prima di Natale. Il comunicato sottolinea inoltre quanto il contributo di tutti sia necessario per realizzare questo obiettivo, contribuendo alla risoluzione dei bug ancora aperti, fornendo strutture per i bug squashing party, scrivendo le <q>Note di rilascio</q> o supportando le traduzioni.</p> <p>Alcuni bug squashing party sono già stati annunciati per <a href="http://wiki.debian.org/BSP2010/Paris";>Parigi</a> e <a href="http://lists.debian.org/1287061434-sup-6...@meteor.durcheinandertal.local";>Berna</a>.</p> <a name="2"></a> <h2>Avviato il nuovo servizio <a href="http://ask.debian.net";>ask.debian.net</a></h2> <p>Con l'aiuto del <a href="http://shapado.com/";>progetto Shapado</a>, alcuni membri del Progetto Debian hanno avviato un nuovo servizio rivolto agli utenti su <a href="http://ask.debian.net/";>ask.debian.net</a>. Tale servizio consente di fare una domanda ed ottenere una risposta fornendo inoltre un sistema di classificazione per gli utenti. Ciò permette agli sviluppatori e agli altri volontari di entrare in contatto in modo semplice con la comunità.</p> <a name="3"></a> <h2>Rilasciato l'aggiornamento di DebianEdu</h2> <p>Il Progetto DebianEdu ha rilasciato un<a href="http://lists.debian.org/201010052157.38081.hol...@layer-acht.org";>aggiornamento di versione</a> del suo Debian Pure Blend sviluppato per scuole ed altri ambienti di istruzione. Tra le novità introdotte è possibile trovare l'aggiornamento dell'installatore che abilita il supporto a nuovo hardware, oltre a correzioni a vari problemi e ad una migliore documentazione. Altri cambiamenti importanti sono stati introdotti con l'aggiunta di molti controlli <tt>Nagios</tt> per monitorare la salute del sistema, migliorando così <tt>site-summary</tt> e fornendo soluzioni ai problemi presenti in <tt>shutdown-at-night</tt>.</p> <a name="4"></a> <h2>Nuova sezione <q>sloppy</q> backport per Debian <q>Lenny</q></h2> <p>Gerfried Fuchs del Team Backports di Debian <a href="http://lists.debian.org/20101004201643.ga8...@edna.deb.at";>ha annunciato una nuova sezione dei backport</a> per <q>Lenny</q>: <q>lenny-backports-sloppy</q>. Il loro utilizzo è simile a quello della normale sezione backport, ma c'è una sostanziale differenza nei contenuti. Mentre gli utenti dei backport normali possono non aggiornare fino al rilascio della successiva Debian stabile, senza incorrere in grossi problemi (poiché vi sono solo i backport della distribuzione immediatamente successiva), per quelli della nuova suite può essere necessario prendere qualche precauzioni, in quanto i backport non arrivano necessariamente dal ramo successivo, ma possono arrivare da quello ancora dopo. La nuova suite può quindi anche contenere pacchetti più recenti (ad esempio già del ramo <q>unstable</q> durante il freeze di testing). In sostanza permette di avere accesso alle versioni più aggiornate dei pacchetti; gli utenti non possono quindi semplicemente aggiornare al successivo rilascio stabile, ma dovranno quanto meno utilizzare anche i corrispondenti backport della suite normale per i pacchetti provenienti dalla suite sloppy.</p> <a href="5"></a> <h2>Risoluzione generale sulla qualifica di membro del Progetto Debian</h2> <p>Dopo che il Debian Project Leader Stefano Zacchiroli ha presentato una risoluzione generale sui <a href="http://www.debian.org/vote/2010/vote_002";>membri del progetto Debian che non si occupano di pacchettizzazione</a>, si è attualmente in fase di <a href="http://lists.debian.org/20101004194749.gs4...@halon.org.uk";>voto </a> in merito alla questione. Se la risoluzione passerà, gli Account Manager saranno chiamati a stabilire le procedure volte a valutare ed accettare questo tipo di contributori all'interno del progetto, dando loro pieno diritto di voto. In questa nuova categoria sarebbero inclusi, ad esempio, coloro che scrivono la documentazione e i traduttori.</p> <p>In una notizia correlata, Enrico Zini del New Maintainer Front Desk ha inviato una mail del genere <a href="http://lists.debian.org/20101013074217.ga8...@enricozini.org";><q>notizie da</q></a>. Ha dato il benvenuto a Xavier Oswald come membro a tutti gli effetti del Front Desk e ha sottolineato che i candidati a Debian Developer dovranno avere, d'ora in avanti, una chiave GPG più forte. Infatti, secondo le recenti <a href="http://lists.debian.org/20100914051848.gh22...@gwolf.org";>notizie dai manutentori dei keyring</a>, l'uso delle chiavi DSA a 1024 bit è sconsigliato.</p> <a name="6"></a> <h2>Immagine ibrida dell'installatore per dispositivi ottici e USB</h2> <p>Joey Hess ha scritto un articolo sul suo blog riguardo ad una <a href="http://kitenet.net/~joey/blog/entry/Debian_USB_install_from_hybrid_iso/";>iso ibrida del debian-installer per dischi USB ed ottici</a>. Sebbene da qualche tempo sia possibile avviare il debian-installer da chiavetta USB, la procedura per preparare una chiavetta USB avviabile in quel modo è piuttosto complicata. La nuova immagine ISO ibrida può essere sia masterizzata su CD che semplicemente copiata tal quale (con <tt>cat</tt>) su periferiche USB. È anche molto semplice aggiungere altri firmware. Joey inoltre rileva come a causa di problemi con i modelli jigdo, al momento venga creata solo una immagine ibrida minimale, ma fa anche notare che è molto facile rendere le attuali immagini adatte alle chiavette USB mediante il comando <tt>isohybrid</tt> dal pacchetto <a href="http://packages.debian.org/syslinux";>syslinux</a>.</p> <a name="7"></a> <h2>Sulle non-notizie di rimozione di pacchetti nel ramo testing di Debian</h2> <p>È un fatto degno di nota che un pacchetto, sia pure popolare come il <a href="http://packages.debian.org/chromium-browser";>browser web Chromium</a>, venga rimosso o aggiunto al ramo <q>testing</q> di Debian? Secondo il Debian Project Leader Stefano Zacchiroli <a href="http://upsilon.cc/~zack/blog/posts/2010/10/Debian_squeezes_Chromium_back_in/";>no</a>: egli sottolinea come Chromium sia proprio un buon esempio di notizia non degna di nota. Chromium, infatti, era stato rimosso dal ramo testing di Debian, causando una certa agitazione mediatica e alcune critiche, poiché sembrava che non avrebbe fatto parte della prossima stable. Tuttavia, appena i bug critici sono stati corretti, il pacchetto è stato nuovamente ammesso in testing. Cosa che, secondo Stefano, è un'altra non-notizia.</p> <a name="8"></a> <h2>Seguire le mailing list Debian attraverso servizi di micro-blogging</h2> <p>Valessio Brito <a href="http://lists.debian.org/20100909150907.57032hggzrpdi...@ssl.eumx.net";>ha annunciato</a> la <a href="http://follow.debianart.org/";>versione beta</a> di un nuovo servizio che permette agli utenti delle piattaforme di micro-blogging di <a href="http://lists.debian.org/20100908013207.13173fq11p6fp...@ssl.eumx.net";>seguire le discussioni</a> di svariate mailing list Debian. È possibile effettuare ricerche per tag, bug, conferenze o scritti specifici.</p> <a name="9"></a> <h2>Campagna <q>Four days</q> per i Debian Mentee</h2> <p>L'attuale approccio al mentoring dei manutentori dei nuovi pacchetti, che non possono caricare i pacchetti autonomamente, è ben lungi dall'essere perfetto poiché non permette loro di fornire un feedback. Asheesh Laroia e Niels Thykier hanno cercato di trovare una soluzione. Come prima cosa hanno iniziato una <a href="http://www.asheesh.org/note/debian/four-days.html";>campagna</a> <a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-mentors/2010/10/msg00005.html";>con lo scopo di</a> assicurare che tutte le mail della <a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-mentors";>lista debian-mentors</a> ricevano una risposta entro quattro giorni. Il secondo passo prevede la revisione del servizio <a href="http:/mentors.debian.net">mentors.debian.net</a> che consente ai manutentori di caricare i pacchetti in un sito centrale. <a href="http://lists.debian.org/alpine.deb.2.00.1010081045040.10...@rose.makesad.us";><q>debexpo</q></a> non permetterà solo di caricare i pacchetti ed eseguire alcuni test limitati, ma consentirà ai manutentori e ad altri utenti di controllarli e commentarli. Nessun problema! Aside from updating the documentation for point releases and deciding about the future of the <a href="http://www.debian.org/volatile/";>volatile archive</a>, a major topic was the progress of the upcoming release of Debian 6.0 <q>Squeeze</q>. They called for content for the Release Notes, which should document all potential problems during an upgrade. They also noted that all transitions have been done, and named the current blockers of the release: <a href="http://bugs.debian.org/571255";>a bug in udev</a> which might cause problems during upgrades (a patch has been proposed in the meantime); a <a href="http://bugs.debian.org/546528";>problem in the preinstallation script of dash</a> (a patch has been proposed and is currently being investigated); the need for debian-installer to reach its final release; the lack of proper documentation in the Release Notes for <q>Squeeze</q> installs and upgrades; and finally the requirement for the security archive to support the new source format 3.0.</p> <p>All in all the release team hopes to have these blockers sorted out by the end of October, which would allow a release before Christmas. The release team also points out that the help of everyone is needed to get this accomplished, be it by squashing the remaining bugs, providing facilities for real life bug squashing parties, writing the Release Notes, or supporting translations.</p> <p>Some real life bug squashing parties have already been announced for <a href="http://wiki.debian.org/BSP2010/Paris";>Paris</a> and <a href="http://lists.debian.org/1287061434-sup-6...@meteor.durcheinandertal.local";>Bern</a>.</p> <a name="2"></a> <h2>New question and answer service at <a href="http://ask.debian.net";>ask.debian.net</a></h2> <p>With the help of the <a href="http://shapado.com/";>Shapado Project</a>, members of the Debian project started a new user oriented service at <a href="http://ask.debian.net/";>ask.debian.net</a>. It lets users ask specific questions and find answers, while also providing rating systems and badges for users. It allows Debian Developers and other contributors to easily stay in touch with the community.</p> <a name="3"></a> <h2>Updated DebianEdu released</h2> <p>The DebianEdu Project has released an <a href="http://lists.debian.org/201010052157.38081.hol...@layer-acht.org";>updated version</a> of its Debian Pure Blend targeting schools and similar environments. This update includes an updated installer to support new hardware as well as various bug fixes and documentation improvements. Other notable changes are improvements of site summary where several Nagios checks have been added to monitor system health as well as a fix for shutdown-at-night.</p> <a name="4"></a> <h2>New <q>sloppy</q> backports suite for stable Debian <q>Lenny</q></h2> <p>Gerfried Fuchs from Debian's backports team <a href="http://lists.debian.org/20101004201643.ga8...@edna.deb.at";>announced a new suite on backports</a> for Debian <q>Lenny</q>: <q>lenny-backports-sloppy</q>. Its usage is similar to the regular backports suite, but there's a major difference in the contents of the suites: while users of the normal backports suite can expect to update without major problems to the next Debian stable release (as it only contains backports of the next following distribution), users of the newly created backports-sloppy suite may need to take special precautions, as the backports of the sloppy suite are not restricted to coming from the next distribution, but may come from the second-next. The new suite thus may also contain newer packages (e.g. during the freeze already from the <q>unstable</q> branch). It therefore allows users to easily access newer versions of packages; but users can not just upgrade to the following stable release. They will at least need to upgrade to using the backports suite for the next release.</p> <a href="5"></a> <h2>General resolution about Debian project membership</h2> <p>After Debian Project Leader Stefano Zacchiroli proposed a general resolution about <a href="http://www.debian.org/vote/2010/vote_002";>non-packaging Debian project members</a>, this resolution is currently being <a href="http://lists.debian.org/20101004194749.gs4...@halon.org.uk";>voted on</a>. If it passes it would invite Debian's Account Managers to establish procedures to evaluate and accept non-packaging contributors to the project including full voting rights. Non-packaging contributors include for example documentation writers and translators.</p> <p>In related news, Enrico Zini from the New Maintainer Front Desk sent a <a href="http://lists.debian.org/20101013074217.ga8...@enricozini.org";><q>bits from</q> mail</a>. He welcomed Xavier Oswald as full member of the Front Desk and noted that applicants to become Debian Developers will need stronger GPG keys from now on. Following the recent <a href="http://lists.debian.org/20100914051848.gh22...@gwolf.org";>bits from the keyring maintainers</a>, the use of 1024 bit DSA keys is discouraged.</p> <a name="6"></a> <h2>Hybrid installer image for optical and USB devices</h2> <p>Joey Hess blogged about a <a href="http://kitenet.net/~joey/blog/entry/Debian_USB_install_from_hybrid_iso/";>hybrid debian-installer for USB and optical discs</a>. While it has been possible to boot debian-installer from USB sticks for quite some time, the procedure to make such a bootable USB stick has been quite difficult. The new hybrid ISO image can be burned to CDs as well as simply copied raw (with <tt>cat</tt>) to USB devices. It is also very easy to add additional firmware. Joey also mentions that due to problems with the jigdo templates, currently only a minimal hybrid image is created, but he points out that it is very easy to make the existing ISO images suitable for USB sticks by using the <tt>isohybrid</tt> command from the <a href="http://packages.debian.org/syslinux";>syslinux</a> package.</p> <a name="7"></a> <h2>About the non-news of package removals in Debian's testing branch</h2> <p>Is it newsworthy if packages, even popular ones like the <a href="http://packages.debian.org/chromium-browser";>Chromium web browser</a>, get removed or added to Debian's testing branch? Debian Project Leader Stefano Zacchiroli <a href="http://upsilon.cc/~zack/blog/posts/2010/10/Debian_squeezes_Chromium_back_in/";>doesn't think so</a> and points out that Chromium is a good example for the non-newsworthiness of these things. It had been removed from Debian's testing branch, causing a media fuss and some criticism, as it appeared that Chromium would not be part of the next stable release. However, as the release critical bugs have been fixed, the package was allowed back again. Which is - according to Stefano - actually not newsworthy either.</p> <a name="8"></a> <h2>Following Debian Mailing lists via micro-blogging services</h2> <p>Valessio Brito <a href="http://lists.debian.org/20100909150907.57032hggzrpdi...@ssl.eumx.net";>announced</a> the <a href="http://follow.debianart.org/";>beta version</a> of a new service allowing users of micro-blogging services to <a href="http://lists.debian.org/20100908013207.13173fq11p6fp...@ssl.eumx.net";>follow the topics</a> of various Debian mailing lists. It is possible to search for particular tags, bugs, meetings, or specific work. </p> <a name="9"></a> <h2><q>Four days</q> promise for Debian Mentees</h2> <p>The current approach of mentoring new package maintainers who can't upload packages themselves is far from perfect as it doesn't ensure mentees get feedback. Asheesh Laroia and Niels Thykier tried to come up with a solution. As a first step they started a <a href="http://www.asheesh.org/note/debian/four-days.html";>campaign</a> <a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-mentors/2010/10/msg00005.html";>promising</a> to ensure that all mails on the <a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-mentors";>debian-mentors list</a> get an answer within four days. The second step is a rewrite of the <a href="http:/mentors.debian.net">mentors.debian.net</a> service allowing mentees to upload packages to a central location. <a href="http://lists.debian.org/alpine.deb.2.00.1010081045040.10...@rose.makesad.us";><q>debexpo</q></a> will not only allow mentees to upload their packages and run some limited tests, but will also allow mentors and other people to check and comment on the packages. However, some help is still needed before the new service can go online.</p> <a name="10"></a> <h2>Who's using Debian?</h2> <p>Are you interested to know why other people use Debian? No problem! Debian maintains a <a href="http://www.debian.org/users";>list of Debian users</a> ranging from governmental or educational institutions up to dozens of companies, of which surprisingly not all are IT related. Stefano also gave his monthly <a href="http://lists.debian.org/20101006193309.ga28...@upsilon.cc";>DPL report</a> where he summarised his recent activities. He listed a number of interesting interviews and talks he gave, what money has been spent on, and his communication with other teams inside Debian.</p> <p>Robert Millan reported on <a href="http://robertmh.wordpress.com/2010/10/13/about-zfs-in-squeeze/";>his personal blog</a> about ZFS integration into the Debian Installer for kFreeBSD. Aside from a patch for GNU Parted, all other patches needed for a ZFS root filesystem have been accepted and made it into Debian <q>Squeeze</q>.
