This kind of problem usually happens when there is an issue at the plug/cable level. Are you using a USB extension cord? Have you tried the device on another USB port or on another machine? Have you tried with the jessie kernel? Anyway I really doubt the problem the problem is in usbutils (a set of programs to display USB devices properties), so I am reassigning the bug to the linux package with this mail.
