Package: src:linux Version: 3.16.7-ckt9-3 Severity: important Dear Maintainer,
* What led up to the situation? This bug seems to appear randomly. At some point of running my laptop shuts down wired interface (in all ~8 occassions i've been actively using network). I am using alienware m17x laptop with mix of testing (which is stable Jessie since yesterday) and unstable, with following pin-priorities: $ cat /etc/apt/preferences Package: * Pin: release a=testing Pin-Priority: 500 Package: * Pin: release a=unstable Pin-Priority: 499 Package: * Pin: release a=experimental Pin-Priority: -10 >From unstable i'm using mostly wine-development and virtualbox packages (when they were removed from testing). I am using Gnome with network-manager. Virtualbox and nvidia kernel modules are probably two which taint kernel. Unfortunately i'm using both for my everyday tasks - so it's hard to reproduce bug on clean kernel, given it's seemingly random nature. I observed 1st manifestation of bug after i received my laptop from service and upgraded my system. According to service engineers, they did nothing but clean some dust and replace thermic interfaces, thus most likely following system update led to an issue: 12:46:23 =============================================================================== When this bug appears, following things happen: 1) Wired interface (managed via network manager) goes down. I suppose it's not a NM issue because only kernel packages (out of relevant ones) were updated. 2) kern.log and syslog are getting flooded with messages like this: Apr 26 12:12:21 kreo kernel: [ 2770.785508] alx 0000:08:00.0 eth0: fatal interrupt 0x4019607, resetting at a rate of approximately 5k messages per second. Probably it's reason why one of CPU cores gets 100% consumption. 3) Ifconfig stats start to quickly ramp up: eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr f0:1f:af:68:76:70 UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:10376641115096 errors:9079560861630 dropped:1297080123090 overruns:1297080123090 frame:3891240369270 TX packets:6485400685671 errors:5188320492360 dropped:0 overruns:1297080123090 carrier:2594160246180 collisions:5188320492360 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:1297244635520 (1.1 TiB) TX bytes:1297086656418 (1.1 TiB) Interrupt:18 After it happens, sometimes i am able to shut down laptop, sometimes not (machine becomes completely unresponsive and i'm forced to do hard shutwodn). Usually there're no log entries before and after this massive wall of 'fatal interrupts', theonly time i saw something in logs is this (maybe i tried to restart networking or network-manager via services): Apr 25 13:57:59 kreo kernel: [ 1611.042583] alx 0000:08:00.0 eth0: fatal interrupt 0x4019607, resetting Apr 25 13:57:59 kreo kernel: [ 1611.049114] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready Apr 25 13:57:59 kreo kernel: [ 1611.092778] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready Overall issue looks very similar to this: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1330844 I do not have any experience with debugging kernel-related issues thus some guidelines on what info to get, where and how are appreciated. * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)? Use machine for normal everyday 'needs' (browsing internet, watching media streams, playing games). * What was the outcome of this action? Wired interface randomly goes down. * What outcome did you expect instead? Wired interface should not go down unless i tell it so or external factors force it to go down. -- Package-specific info: ** Version: Linux version 3.16.0-4-amd64 (debian-kernel@lists.debian.org) (gcc version 4.8.4 (Debian 4.8.4-1) ) #1 SMP Debian 3.16.7-ckt9-3 (2015-04-23) ** Command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-3.16.0-4-amd64 root=UUID=f2a92f95-1dea-4e09-ba73-9d60febe6537 ro quiet ** Tainted: PO (4097) * Proprietary module has been loaded. * Out-of-tree module has been loaded. ** Kernel log: [ 3.215739] usbcore: registered new interface driver btusb [ 3.262162] sound hdaudioC0D0: autoconfig: line_outs=1 (0x14/0x0/0x0/0x0/0x0) type:speaker [ 3.262165] sound hdaudioC0D0: speaker_outs=0 (0x0/0x0/0x0/0x0/0x0) [ 3.262166] sound hdaudioC0D0: hp_outs=2 (0x15/0x16/0x0/0x0/0x0) [ 3.262167] sound hdaudioC0D0: mono: mono_out=0x0 [ 3.262167] sound hdaudioC0D0: inputs: [ 3.262169] sound hdaudioC0D0: Mic=0x19 [ 3.262169] sound hdaudioC0D0: Internal Mic=0x12 [ 3.268330] input: HDA Intel PCH Mic as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1b.0/sound/card0/input9 [ 3.268385] input: HDA Intel PCH Headphone Front as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1b.0/sound/card0/input10 [ 3.268437] input: HDA Intel PCH Headphone Surround as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1b.0/sound/card0/input11 [ 3.302371] ACPI Warning: SystemIO range 0x0000000000005000-0x000000000000501f conflicts with OpRegion 0x0000000000005000-0x000000000000500f (\_SB_.PCI0.SBUS.SMBI) (20140424/utaddress-258) [ 3.302376] ACPI: If an ACPI driver is available for this device, you should use it instead of the native driver [ 3.302420] shpchp: Standard Hot Plug PCI Controller Driver version: 0.4 [ 3.302519] wmi: Mapper loaded [ 3.343995] [drm] Initialized drm 1.1.0 20060810 [ 3.376364] cfg80211: Calling CRDA to update world regulatory domain [ 3.412110] FAT-fs (sdb1): utf8 is not a recommended IO charset for FAT filesystems, filesystem will be case sensitive!
