The 3.0 firmware files work for me! This is an old Centrino laptop with a fresh Wheezy install. At a big site with many APs, wireless stops after 15 to 45 minutes, requiring a reload of the ipw2200 kernel module. When using OpenVPN, it stops after only a few minutes, making it unusable. The 3.14 backport kernel does not change that.
Throwing the firmware files from the link given by Andres into /lib/firmware and reloading the kernel module one last time resolved the issue. The card in question is, according to lspci : "Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 2200BG [Calexico2] Network Connection (rev 05)".
