Did you try reproducing this with Linux 3.14? For your #3, you should try passing i915.invert_brightness=1 to the kernel when booting (press E in Grub and add this at the end of the "linux" line), it should solve the problem. I've read somewhere that if your machine requires this you should report it, but I don't remember where so. Hope this helps, Matteo
