sorry for taking so long, but I got snowed under. because of this I did nothing on this for a few weeks, and didn't upgrade my system either. The problem persisted, and happened reproducibly on every shutdown. I then started what you suggested above, removing drivers and then shutting down. Initially the results were inconclusive, I got a few correct shutdown and a few reboots with different combinations of drivers being removed. interestingly, at some point the "correct" beahvious seems to have stuck, because after that the system shuts down correctly, no matter what drivers are loaded. I left it in the same state that it was before the experimentation for a few more weeks with a shutdown every day, and did not experience any further problems. a few days ago I had to upgrade the system for some dependency issue, also installing a new kernel. so I am not in a good position to diagnose this anymore. I don't think the system can possible remember anything in that area across a cold restart, so the above doesn't really make sense. Perhaps it was a flaky power supply after all... I'll keep an eye on it and will report if the problem comes back, but for now it isn't reproducible. Not sure if you want to close th bug or leave it around... thanks robert -- Robert Lemmen http://www.semistable.com
