Disabling power saving on the wireless card with 'iw dev wlan0 set power_save off' has let the machine run for about 2 weeks without incident. FYI, this idea of disabling power saving came from the ath9k-devel mailing list ( https://lists.ath9k.org/pipermail/ath9k-devel/2013-May/011348.html ).
