It looks like the empty /spu was just fixed by:

powerpc/spufs: Initialise inode->i_ino in spufs_new_inode()
which went into Linux 3.8.12 and should be in the next version in Debian
unstable. It will take a bit longer to get into a 3.2.y update.
I don't know whether this change will also fix the crash.
