Results with xserver-xorg-video-vesa:-
squeeze kernel: works out of the box defaulting to 640x480
squeeze-backports: complains about modeset in use or somesuch

I'm satisfied that this is not a bug because I tried
modprobe -r i915
modprobe i915 modeset=1
this resulted in a high res terminal which proves that the framebuffer does
work.
starting xorg after that causes the system to hang but I think that this is a
known issue and can be
configured around.
In any case wheezy works fine so I'm happy and suggest closing.

thanks, Philip
