So I've tested several kernel versions. First, I built 3.2.41 from linux-source-3.2 (3.2.41-2). It hanged after 18 hours of working, as expected.
Then I built 3.2.41, but without debian patches - hanged as well. 3.8.5 - proved to be perfectly OK. 3.3.8 - OK too. 3.3.1 - OK as well. 3.2.42 - very odd behaviour. Can't even get past DM login screen. Conclusion: this bug looks transient. It should go away after upgrading kernel to 3.3 or higher.
