From what i know Intel is still caring about those old hardware and, in particular Chris Wilson, in the last year has made a lot of work around gen2 hardware: today a lot of GPU hangs are now resolved, SNA works and with xf86-video-intel 2.21.0 the even older i830/i845 are now considered stable:
