Looks like you already found the answer, but for the record: As a result of that thread I started using the fixes from the drm-intel-fixes branch of git://people.freedesktop.org/~danvet/drm-intel , including the referenced fa555837 commit, and I have not seen the warning since. I cannot remember having noticed the flicker issue though, so I cannot confirm whether that is fixed or not.
