Bug also reproducible on linux-image-3.5-trunk. Switching back to 2.6.32 and passing "radeon.modeset=0" at kernel prompt solves the issue - no freezes. But with 3.2 and 3.5 even that does not work for my RV350.
Definitively a kernel bug, please report upstream.
