Hi, I believe this is the same bug as launchpad bug 606238:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/606238 The bug discusses various Dell laptops with ALPS touchpad that don't work. They now work in the ubuntu 12.04 kernel (and I believe upstream as well), but some (such as the one found in an Inspiron 15R N5110) still don't work because they use yet another protocol version.
