Hi Jonathan, I filled a bug against i8kutils (#673046) because I found a way to always reproduce this behaviour. This happens with Linux 3.2.0-2-amd64 in testing, though. I know this might not be the right place to notify this.
Anyway, I think it's important to note that it also happens in console mode with no X server running, so no need to blame Synaptics X driver, although it really becomes annoying while using X.
