Current Debian kernels get PATA support using the libata facility (see CONFIG_PATA_* in the .config). Please attach messages from your failed boot, as collected with netconsole or a serial console, or, failing that, a photograph of the screen. Please also attach full "dmesg" and "lspci -vvnn" output from a successful boot so we can get to know your hardware.
