They're my attempt to describe different stages of startup, and are probably inaccurate. A default Debian desktop workstation install will, on booting, go through several visible stages relevant for this report: * the default text mode left by the boot loader (“initial Linux console”) * a mode switch to provide a high-resolution text console (“framebuffer text console”) * a switch to a graphics console, on VC7, to present GDM 3 (“graphics console”) * then the user logs in through GDM 3 * a GNOME 3 session with either accelerated graphics or not (“gnome-shell mode”) Please let me know more conventional terms for these, so that I can communicate better what's happening. -- \ “Nature abhors a moron.” —Henry L.
