They're my attempt to describe different stages of startup, and are
probably inaccurate.

A default Debian desktop workstation install will, on booting, go through
several visible stages relevant for this report:

  * the default text mode left by the boot loader
    (“initial Linux console”)

  * a mode switch to provide a high-resolution text console
    (“framebuffer text console”)

  * a switch to a graphics console, on VC7, to present GDM 3
    (“graphics console”)

  * then the user logs in through GDM 3

  * a GNOME 3 session with either accelerated graphics or not
    (“gnome-shell mode”)

Please let me know more conventional terms for these, so that I can
communicate better what's happening.
