I've been using Debian for a long time, with the Geforce GT 8800 and Radeon HD 4200 graphics cards, and installed their proprietary driver fglrx and nvidia-glx. Never package firmware-linux-nonfree is not required, the acceleration is always switched on at once. Now, as one would avoid such issues: 1) Install firmware-linux-nonfree automatically with Debian installer if it required. 2) If the boot was interrupted, and Debian output red letters on a black background: "that the GPU should install firmware-linux-nonfree package, then <enter> to continue". The same message can be duplicated in the GNOME environment but in a graphical form, and immediately offer to install it would have been much easier. Thanks.
