If the behavior still seems worse than ideal, before talking to upstream at alsa-de...@alsa-project.org (moderated for non-subscribers) and cc-ing this bug log it probably would be useful to test without the nvidia and virtualbox drivers and as recent a kernel as possible (e.g., the one from experimental, although I don't see any relevant recent changes).
