I'm also guessing "xset dpms force on" does not help. I did not find a change that would obviously fix this, although v2.6.37-rc1~77^2~31^2~1 (drm/i915: mark display port DPMS state as 'ON' when enabling output, 2010-10-03) seems vaguely relevant. Does this still happen with the kernel from sid? If it does, we should report this upstream; otherwise, we can start searching for a fix in earnest to backport to squeeze.
