3.0.0-1-486 should also work, for what it's worth.

No, that is obviously interesting.  So it seems this is PAE-specific
--- good to know.  Could you attach a copy of /proc/cpuinfo and kernel
logs from booting 3.0.0-1-686-pae (which should fail) and 3.0.0-1-486
(which should succeed) from sid?
